University of California, Santa Barbara Library, “Anguish, Anger, and Activism: Legacies of the 1969 Santa Barbara Oil Spill,” https://spotlight.library.ucsb.edu/starlight/oil-spill.
This exhibit was created by the University of California, Santa Barbara’s Special Collections library in 2019 to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of the Santa Barbara Oil Spill that changed the physical and conversational landscapes of oil production and environmental justice. The event kickstarted the creation of Earth Day in 1970. The material, history, and interpretation of this exhibit is digitized and located on this website, which details the destruction of 77,000 barrels of oil that spilled into the ocean and the work of environmental advocacy and activism throughout the region calling for clean-up, changing industrial practices, and cultural environmental awareness. By visiting this digital exhibit, visitors can learn more about the decades of discussions surrounding what role oil extraction should have on the Santa Barbara coastline and the different perspectives considered by policymakers, the oil industry, and the public.
