Indy Staff, “Offshore Oil: The Long Goodbye,” Santa Barbara Independent, 30 January 2019, www.independent.com/2019/01/30/offshore-oil-long-goodbye/.
This Santa Barbara Independent article provides a broad overview of Santa Barbara’s oily history, which started in the late nineteenth century, led to multiple massive spills, and the present work to decommission many offshore wells. The authors of this piece argue that the 2020s is when “the bill” from nearly 120 years of off-shore oil in Santa Barbara is now coming due, with millions of dollars being poured into Santa Barbara Channel clean up efforts. Ultimately, this work has been a long time coming, with pushes to “Get Oil Out!” of Santa Barbara solidifying after the 1969 oil spill. This article contextualizes the larger extractive history of oil off of Santa Barbara’s coastline and throughout California.
