In contrast to the previous two texts, this entry provides the institutional history of the mission system represented on the California State Parks website. Here, it is important to understand what is included and excluded, and how official documents most often obscure and exclude narratives and histories that cast them in unflattering light. This entry allows readers to see how Indigenous voices and experiences are excluded in many official representations of California’s history.
