Ryan Menzies and Mark Olalde, “California has Thousands of Old Oil Wells. How Many Are in Your Neighborhood?” Los Angeles Times, 4 March 2020, https://www.latimes.com/projects/california-oil-well-drilling-idle-cleanup/map/.
This interactive map created by the Los Angeles Times shows “unplugged” oil and gas wells in the state. Even though they are inactive, these wells still release carcinogens into the local environment and visitors to the map can enter any California address to find if it is within 600 feet of one. More than 350,000 Californians do, illustrating the hidden nature of oil and gas infrastructure and the harm they can do even when they are no longer in use.
